Proper Breathing

.

When doing any exercise, your breathing plays a very important role in your performance and endurance. Each type of exercise has different techniques for breathing to ensure you get the most out of your exercise routine. For example, have you ever watched an experienced boxer or fighter train. Their breathing is very different than other sports, because they are training not just their endurance, but also they use specific breathing techniques to prepare for getting hit by their opponent as well as preparing for striking their opponent. Below are some tips on breathing for some of the more common things you will be doing while at Knockout Fitness.

Breathing while stretching

stretch1-thumbInhale and get a good breath to prepare for the stretch. While you are leaning into your stretch, gently exhale. This will help you get deeper in your stretch, as well as help reduce your heart rate. Don’t hold your breath, as this can cause your heart rate to increase, increase fatique and raise your blood pressure.

Keep your breathing at a steady pace, taking slow, deep and control breaths instead of taking quick shallow breaths. Focus on inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.

Breathing during cardio

cardio1-thumbCardio workouts cause you to exert yourself at a somewhat steady pace. Take medium breaths through your nose, and steadily exhale through your mouth. As you begin to get fatiqued, try not to changing your breathing. Keep your breathing at a steady pace during your cardio.
Pay attention to your body during your cardio. If you are struggling to catch your breath, then slow your pace a bit to help your breathing catch up to the amount of exertion you are performing. Your body will respond, so pay attention to what your heart and lungs are telling you.

Breathing while lifting

lift1-thumbLifting weights of any kind relays greatly on proper breathing techniques to get the best results. While lifting, breath in through your nose while you are loading the weight on your body. Exhale while you are performing the lifting of the weight. As you lift, keep both your breathing and the pace of your lifting steady.

Breathing while striking

boxing1-thumbProper breathing during your striking exercises is critical. It will determine how quickly you get tired, and will help with proper technique. If you have watched an experienced boxer up-close then you’ve probably heard constant “hissing.” The hissing sounds are the quick breaths expelled while throwing punches. By exhaling with each punch, you increase the amount of power behind your punches and allow combinations to flow smoothly and rapidly. If you are throwing multiple strikes, you should exhale slightly with each strike. That way at the end of your combination of strikes, you have exhaled your lungs. Then before the next series of strikes, take a breath, and repeat the exhaling technique during striking.
